What the release covers

A summary in plain words. The full text is the same release both shops use, and you read and sign every part of it at the front desk.

The risks of a tattoo: infection, scarring, and allergic reactions to pigment, gloves or soap. You accept them, and you release the artist and the shop from liability as far as the law allows.

Healing: you follow the aftercare instructions you are given, and a touch-up needed because they were not followed is at your own cost.

Your health and the day itself: you are not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, you are not pregnant or nursing, and you have no condition that could get in the way of the tattoo or its healing, such as diabetes, epilepsy, hemophilia, a heart condition or blood thinners.

Madison Sweet wears glasses and black gloves while tattooing a client's forearm beside studio drawers.

The tattoo: it is permanent, colours soften over time, it may differ a little from the picture you bring, and the spelling and meaning of any lettering are yours to check.

Payment is due at the end of each session, at the price agreed with your artist. Disputes go to the courts of California.

Photographs and video of your tattoo: you choose to accept or decline. If you decline, tell your artist.

Wooden partitions, tattoo chairs and framed artwork fill the Funhouse Tattoo interior.

Start here, sign at the desk

  1. Start it here, if you like

Enter your name, contact details, date of birth and an emergency contact. You get a check-in code to show at the front desk. It is optional: everything can also be done at the shop.

  2. At the front desk

Bring a government photo ID; staff check it before the tattoo. Staff enter your artist, the design and where it goes, then you answer three health questions and read the release.

  3. Sign on the shop's iPad

The release is digital, signed on the shop's iPad. You initial each part, sign on the screen, and can ask for a copy by email.

  4. The digital fingerprint

The signed release is sealed with a code calculated from the document, the time and the device it was signed on. If a word changed later, the code would no longer match. It is not your physical fingerprint.

Questions people ask

Trophies and plaques labeled "Best tribal" and "Best back" surround a horned mask on a shop display.

Do I have to start my release online?

No. Starting here only saves time at the counter. You can do the whole release on the shop's iPad when you arrive.

What do I need to bring?

A government photo ID. You must be 18 or older to get tattooed at either shop; we do not tattoo anyone younger, even with a parent's consent.

The Funhouse Tattoo storefront displays its illustrated sign and neon lettering behind a parked motorcycle.

What is the digital fingerprint?

A code calculated from your signed release, the time it was signed and the device it was signed on. It shows that nothing in the release changed afterwards. It is not your physical fingerprint, and nothing scans your finger.

Can I get a copy of what I signed?

Yes. Ask for it by email on the iPad after you sign, or ask the front desk.

A carved wooden Funhouse sign features gold lettering beneath a fanged face.

Where is my information kept?

In the shops' own release system, not on this website. This site never sees your answers, your signature or your ID.

What if I am not feeling well on the day?

Tell the front desk before you sign. The release asks about fever and flu-like symptoms, and your artist decides with you whether to tattoo today.
