Questions people ask
Booking and cost
Do you take walk-ins?
Yes, every day at both shops. Smaller pieces and flash usually happen the same day. Larger pieces and specific artists need a booked consultation.
How do I book a specific artist?
Use the form on their page, with your mobile number and a few reference photos. They read it and text you to set the consultation.
What does a tattoo cost?
Each artist has an hourly rate; the price depends on size, detail and placement, and your artist quotes it at the free consultation. The deposit is one hour of tattoo time and comes off the last hour.
I am only in San Diego for a few days. Can I get tattooed?
Yes, if you write ahead. We pick the artist who fits your piece rather than whoever is free, so a few days' notice gets you the right person and a held date.
How old do I have to be?
18, with a government photo ID. California does not allow tattooing anyone younger, with or without a parent.
What payment do you take?
Cash, credit and debit cards. No checks.
The tattoo itself
Can you cover up my old tattoo?
Usually. The artist works from a photo of the old piece and designs something darker and larger that absorbs it. The consultation is free, and some pieces heal better with a laser session at our partner Embellish PB first.
Does it hurt, and can you do anything about it?
Yes, and yes. Pain depends on placement and your day. We offer numbing ointment and soap with lidocaine for a small fee, and a rested, fed body sits far more comfortably.
How do I look after it?
Bandage off within 1–2 hours, wash gently, a thin coat of ointment for 2–3 days, plain lotion for 2 weeks, no soaking, no sun. The aftercare page has the whole routine, and we sell the products.
Can I donate blood after a tattoo?
Both shops are licensed California facilities, and most donation centers accept donors shortly after a tattoo from a licensed shop. The center you donate at has the final word, so check with them.
Do you offer aftercare sessions?
Yes. If you want the first wash and ointment done with your artist, book an in-shop aftercare session for a small fee.
Getting here
Parking on and around Garnet Avenue
Garnet Avenue itself is 2-hour parking, which is fine for a consultation and too short for most sessions. For a sit, park a block over: Hornblend St, Felspar St, Haines St and Fanuel St all have free 12-hour parking about a block from both shops.
Funhouse Tattoo is at 1453 Garnet Ave. Redemption Ink is directly across the street at 1440 Garnet Ave, so if you have parked for one you have parked for the other, and the free side streets serve both doors equally well, whichever you book.
